Another
week of hockey has come and gone with two games played, one at home and one
away…here’s the rundown.
Saturday
October 28th took the Blue squad back to South Windsor Rec Complex
to battle the Windsor Sky Blue ladies in an ever important regular season
match. In the dressing room the coaches
had the eerie feeling this was not a game our ladies were hyped up for, and
they were right. From the first puck
drop the Sky Blue’s had our Harrow Blues on their heels and controlled the
first period. An early penalty at 8:37
of the first period by Blair Davis for hooking (again!!!!!!) led to a short-handed
goal in the dying seconds of her penalty at 6:37 of the first period. The second
period started and didn’t show much improvement. Although, certain shifts seemed
to have some spark in them, the ladies managed to make some great team plays on
D to hold the offensive line along with some nice passing between the forwards,
that led to two goals by Blair Davis (2:11) and Sophie Gobbo (1:22), with
assists from Elle Brinacombe and Charolotte Hill, respectively. The second period came to close with some
hope for a continued push from the girls heading into the third period. Well, we were wrong!!! At 9:42 of the third The
Sky Blues found the back of the net (so the ref thought) to tie the game 2-2. The game continued back and forth with shots
and rushes but ended in a 2-2 tie being outshot for the first time this year
27-20. Hard D zone net defense along
with Olivia practically doing cartwheels to stop pucks, kept us tied earning a
valuable point in the standings.
Sunday’s night
game had us playing a rare game in our home barn, as visitors against our SCP
association rivals Amherstburg SCP Yellow.
One thing was for sure, the SCP association certainly has some of the
loudest fans, no matter which team they cheer on, keep it up!!!! What a change from Saturday’s energy in the
room and it transferred to the ice. The
game was electric with our girls fighting and winning most puck battles,
getting the puck out defensively and showing some great pressure on
offense. The first period ended with yellow
ahead 1-0 after a break away led to a goal with 2:12 remaining. The second period did not disappoint the fans
with another nail biter back and forth with both goalies having to manage a lot
of net traffic and shots from everywhere.
With only 0:19 remaining in the period another breakaway led to a goal, ending
the second period down 2-0. The Blue
ladies said enough is enough which had Elle Brinacombe go end to end and score
a nice shot to finally beat the Yellow tendy.
Now being only down by 1, the intensity picked up and a hard fight for
the puck led to Blair Davis heading to the sin bin for another 2min, this time
for slashing. Unfortunately, this shorthanded
effort, allowed another breakaway goal to seal the deal for yellow at 3-1 with
only 2:54 remaining in the game. This
game was a true goalie’s dual, stopping pucks behind their back and any body
part they could throw in the way to stop that black piece of rubber. The shots in this game ended in favour of
yellow 27-16 indicating just how tough our young Oliva Versnel was between the
pipes. As the coaching staff, the girls
had nothing to be ashamed of after that game, that was a tough battle.
With the coaching
staff focusing on lessons learned from this past weekend, Thursdays practice
will be filled with motivational drills with focused learning objectives for
all positions. This upcoming weekend will
bring the ladies two exhibition games.
On Saturday we travel to the Atlas Tube Recreation Centre in Belle River
to face Lakeshore Lightning White @12:30pm and on Sunday we host the Essex
Thunder Orange @ 7:00pm. I only have one
thing left to say GO BLUE!!!!!!
