Trainer Guidelines, Resources and Safety Initiatives

First Aid Kit Supplies

SCPGHA Equipment Director along with the Trainer in Chief will ensure that all trainers for each team have fully stocked first aid kits in advance to the team’s scheduled first practice. It is the responsibility of the trainer to ensure their kit is stocked to support their hockey season. Any items needing replacement can be honoured. Each Trainer will need to identify via email to the Equipment Director, the necessary items that require replacement. Trainers will receive their requested items as soon as the product is made available for distribution.

Upon completion of the hockey season, the trainer’s first aid kit must be returned in its original condition/form.

FIRST AID KIT RECOMMENDED ITEMS

Player Medical Information Form

As identified in the HTCP Level One Certification, trainers must ensure that all players (18+) or player’s parents complete the necessary Medical Information Sheet. The completed sheets must be accessible to the trainer at all times (made available along with the trainers first aid kit) to all practices and scheduled games. This sheet can assist the EAP plan and medical personnel with medical history should an emergency arise. If players are playing for you from another team or playing “up”, a form must be completed prior to the game/practice.

HTCP MEDICAL INFORMATION SHEET

Emergency Action Plan (EAP)Development

SCPGHA will assist to ensure that all trainers on each team are diligent in ensuring that an emergency action plan is created so that an injured player can be properly responded to. The EAP template tool will be made available yearly to all trainers to populate. Charge Person, Call Person and Control Persons must be identified for all SCPGHA teams. The SCPGHA Trainer in Chief will support, guide and monitor the use and implementation of this tool to ensure all players are attended to.

Injury Reporting

SCPGHA encourages all trainers to document all players’ injuries using the Player Team Injury Log form. This documented information can later be transferred to the online injury data collection reporting database.

In addition to the use of the log, as indicated in the HTCP Trainers Level 1 certification course, if a player’s injury requires medical referral and or hospitalization, a Hockey Canada Injury report form needs to be completed and faxed. This form as completed by both you as the trainer, coach/manager and the injured play’s doctor or dentist must be submitted with all accompanying receipts or invoices to Hockey Canada within 90 day of the date of the accident.

Should the injured player have no primary coverage, Hockey Canada will provide total coverage.

NOTE: Hockey Canada is strictly a supplemental insurer only. If an injured player has access to any other insurance, they must pursue it through such insurance first.

Online Injury Data Collection

SCPGHA encourages all trainers to document all players’ injuries using the Player Team Injury Log form. This documented information is to later be transferred to the online injury data collection reporting database. Entered injuries serve to provide organized hockey in Ontario with critical statistical information.

The form should be completed by the team’s trainer each time:

·   A player is removed from play for the remainder of a period or game due to an injury sustained while playing hockey (Example: A player injured in the first period, but who returns to play in the second or third period would have a form filled out for them).

·   A player is injured during a practice, whether on or off the ice.

·   A player is forced to leave play for an unknown health reason.

Return to Play Guidelines & Form

Players who do to an injury, have been removed from play directly as evidenced by a doctor’s note, can only return back to play upon doctor’s approval. The trainer of the team will be required to obtain the doctors note dated and supporting the return to play for the participant. The trainer will notify the coaching staff of the note and if any further restrictions exist. The coaching staff with the supervision of the trainer must adhere to the 6 step return to play guideline as illustrated in the HTCP Trainers Level 1 certification course.

RETURN TO PLAY

Single Trainer

In support and reference to the OMHA Single Trainer Policy 202-2013, SCPGHA will support and allow a trainer to act as the trainer for an opposing team whose trainer is absent. The coaching staff is to secure in advance to a scheduled game of this single trainer need or if under any emergency on game day. Game Referees will be made aware of the single trainer by the coach with no trainer for documentation.

Mouth Guard Use & Safety Awareness

Mouth guards serve to help prevent dental injuries in physical sports. In accordance with OMHA mouth guard policy, mouth guard use is required for all OMHA sanctioned games.  SCPGHA strongly supports and encourages the OMHA mandatory use of mouth guards to all of its participants.

Equipment

It shall be compulsory to all players in SCPGHA to wear equipment as approved by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.

Any players registered in SCPGHA playing hockey or practicing under the direction of the SCPGHA must be dressed in the following CSA approved hockey equipment: helmet and face mask, throat protector, elbow pads, shoulder pads (chest protector), shin pads, pelvic protector (Jill), hockey gloves, hockey pants. In addition all players must wear skates, hockey socks and hockey jersey. Mouth guards are strongly recommended.

All team officials participating in on-ice activities must wear a CSA hockey approved helmet. Trainers or other team officials attending to an injured player are considered exempt from this rule. Chin straps on the helmet must be fastened.

All equipment paid for and owned by SCPGHA will be managed by the Equipment Manager.

Concussion Education-Awareness, Recognition and Guidelines for Coaches/Trainers/Parents/Players

A concussion is an invisible brain injury that cannot be seen by an x-ray, MRI, or CT scan. Concussions affect the way a person thinks and remember things for a short time. Concussions can cause a variety of symptoms.

OWHA is bound by the Rowan’s Law Concussion awareness rules. As a member, South County Predators Girls Hockey Association must conform to the expected awareness rules. Annually, upon registration, all players, parents/guardians (for players under 18), coaches, trainers and other rostered individuals MUST review the online OWHA Concussion Awareness Resources and sign an Acknowledgment Form at the team’s scheduled first meeting.

In addition, SCPGHA has developed an internal Concussion Protocol and Pathway for its associating members. This protocol will further assist coaches/trainers/parents and players for the prevention, recognition of and concussion symptom management to help further build awareness and influence positive behaviours. The Concussion Protocol will be presented yearly at the team’s scheduled first meeting.

Trainers will be required to participate in all concussion educational workshops when made available from SCPGHA.

Automated External Defibrillators (AED)

Automated external defibrillators (AED) are electronic devices used to restart a person's heart if it has stopped beating. AEDs can help save lives.

AEDs are small portable machines that:

·  analyze the person's heart rhythm

·  determine whether a shock is needed

·  use voice or screen prompts to guide the rescuer through the process

As the team’s trainer please familiarize yourself to the location of each AED in each participating arena and ensure a member of your EAP team is also aware of its location and can provide you with the machine for use when needed.

Water Bottles

In risk of transferring illnesses and or diseases as a result from the sharing of water bottles both at games and practices, SCPGHA supports OWHA water bottle policy to not provide team water bottles. SCPGHA will not contribute or support the sharing of water bottles amongst players. It is to be communicated by coaching staff to all players in advance to of their first on ice practice of the need for own water bottles for personal use.
